Heartbreaking Update: Zelnay Liebenberg

zelnay update

With a very heavy heart, I am sharing an update received from Zelnay’s mommy following the results of her recent bone marrow tests.

Sadly, the news they had so desperately hoped and prayed for was not the outcome they received.
The results revealed that 99% of the cancer cells have returned. At this stage, there are no further treatment options available for precious Zelnay. Her little body is no longer responding to chemotherapy, and the relapses have followed too quickly.

Because she is not in remission, doctors are unable to proceed with a bone marrow transplant or immunotherapy. Further chemotherapy is no longer considered a safe option for her.

Last night, Zelnay was brought home, where she is surrounded by the love, comfort, and safety of her family. She will continue to visit the hospital once or twice a week for follow-up care. Should she require blood or platelet transfusions, these will be provided, and if she becomes very ill, she will be admitted and supported as best as possible. Her medical team will do everything they can to manage any pain and keep her comfortable.

I kindly ask that we respect the family’s privacy and give them the time and space they need to process this heartbreaking news and spend precious moments together. Every prayer, message, and act of kindness has meant more than words can express.

If messages are not read or answered immediately, please understand that the family simply needs time to be together.

Right now, I ask that we surround this precious little girl and her family with love, grace and endless prayers.

Update Miliah Prinsloo: Urgent Medical Care and Specialist Support Needed

Miliah Prinsloo

Living with a rare genetic chromosome disorder, 16q11.2q21 Duplication

Imagine a condition so rare that fewer than ten people worldwide have it. This is Miliah’s reality. Her rare chromosome disorder is largely unchartered territory, leaving local medical professionals with very little data or guidance to help her. Finding answers and funding the specialised care she needs is a constant, uphill battle.

Miliah, is facing a complex and challenging health journey. Her diagnoses include global developmental delay, speech impairment, neurological and behavioural difficulties, self harm tendencies, absent seizures, and hypermobility with an ankle valgus deformity. Physically, she also copes with lordosis, incontinence, irritable bowel syndrome, fatty liver disease, and severe inflammation throughout her entire digestive system, from her oesophagus to her colon.

To thrive, Miliah needs ongoing Specialist care, constant therapy, daily medications, and nappies. The financial reality of these medical costs is overwhelming.

It has been shared with us by Miliah’s mother that, following specialist intervention, a psychiatric admission has been recommended for Miliah, with the process needing to begin as soon as possible due to the seriousness of her current condition.

This has understandably been an incredibly distressing time for the family. One of the greatest concerns is the initial 72-hour observation period, during which parents may not be permitted to remain with their child, a heartbreaking prospect for any parent facing such circumstances.

Miliah has been experiencing severe emotional dysregulation and an escalation in self-harming behaviours, which have significantly impacted both her home and school life.

Her family is navigating an immensely challenging season, emotionally and financially, as urgent medical care and specialist support become necessary.

WAYS THAT YOU CAN HELP MILIAH

Should you feel moved to support Miliah’s journey, any contribution, no matter how big or small, would be deeply appreciated in helping ease the growing burden of medical expenses during this difficult time.

Please keep Miliah and her family in your thoughts and prayers.

There are illnesses no one talks about. Diseases many people have never even heard of.

Behind closed doors, families are fighting daily battles — surgeries, hospital visits, pain, fear, and exhaustion — while the world stays silent.

Rare diseases deserve awareness.
Patients deserve understanding.
Caregivers deserve support.
Children deserve to be seen.

We need more voices. More education. More compassion. More research.

Because “rare” should never mean invisible.

Update on Little Warrior Zelnay – Leukemia Relapse

zelnay liebenberg

Update 12 May 2025:

Zelnay’s parents met with her oncologist this morning. Sadly, her cancer cell count has increased.

The doctor has taken into account that, for two weeks following her previous bone marrow tests, Zelnay did not receive chemotherapy. As a result, the medical team now needs to wait for the outcome of her next bone marrow test to better assess her response to treatment. These results will indicate whether the current, stronger chemotherapy is effective, or if her small body is showing resistance.

In the meantime, doctors have decided to continue chemotherapy without interruption to prevent any further increase in cancer cells. Zelnay restarted treatment today and is currently receiving two bags of chemotherapy, which will continue until Saturday.

At present, Zelnay is very weak. She has developed nosebleeds and will be receiving platelet support today. Her medical team will be monitoring her closely, including testing her kidney function every second day to ensure there is no damage from the treatment. She is also battling a lung infection and is on strong antibiotics, as well as experiencing painful mouth sores.

For now, the next bone marrow test is critical in determining the way forward.

The ultimate goal remains for Zelnay to receive immunotherapy to bring her into full remission, as a bone marrow transplant cannot proceed unless remission is achieved. She requires four cycles of immunotherapy, at a cost of R515 878.00 per cycle.

We humbly appeal to the community to support Zelnay in accessing this life-saving treatment. The financial burden is overwhelming for any family, and every contribution, no matter how small, makes a difference.

Please keep Zelnay and her parents in your prayers. We believe in the power of prayer and the strength of community. Kindly share her story with your friends, family, and networks far and wide.

Please share this post with your family and friends and help us spread the word far and wide. Let’s come together and give Zelnay the fighting chance she deserves.

Join Anru’s Support Circle: Help Cover His Medical Care and Diagnostic Testing

anru steenkamp fundraiser

Anru Steenkamp’s journey with epilepsy began at just nine months old, and while the condition was managed for several years, his health took a complex turn in late 2025. By January 2026, Anru was diagnosed with two additional types of epilepsy and two brain cysts. Specialists have determined that draining the cysts is too high-risk due to their proximity to major blood vessels. Despite various medication adjustments, Anru continues to suffer from seizures three to four times a week.

Recent developments have shifted the focus toward genetic research. Although initial tests in 2024 were dismissed, a Specialist in March 2026 identified a rare genetic mutation. This variant is so new that experts are still studying its effects, but it could hold the key to understanding Anru’s seizures and his autism, which was diagnosed in April 2025. To move forward, his parents must also undergo genetic testing. However, because the samples must be couriered to the United States, the costs are currently prohibitive.

Anru turns four this May. He also faces developmental delays, hyperactivity, and sensory processing challenges. His restricted diet requires nutritional supplements, and he frequently requires speech and occupational therapy. The family’s savings have been exhausted by the ongoing costs of private Specialist visits, chronic medication co-payments, and essential therapies.

To provide Anru with the necessary care and reach a definitive diagnosis, funds are required to cover specialised genetic testing courier fees, regular consultations with a Paediatric Neurologist and Paediatrician, and essential weekly occupational therapy sessions. Additionally, support is needed for his monthly nutritional supplements, sleep medication, and the recurring co-payments for his chronic epilepsy treatment. These resources are fundamental to ensuring Anru receives the consistent medical intervention and therapeutic support he requires.

We have also launched a heartfelt bracelet project to help raise funds for his ongoing medical expenses. Purchase a bracelet today and join his circle of hope and support!

Supporting CJ’s Journey with Rare Genetic Challenges

CJ MATTHEE FUNDRAISER

CJ Matthee is a seventeen-year-old young man from Kathu; a kind, gentle soul with a smile that brightens any room.

CJ was born with Menke-Hennekam Syndrome (MKHK), a rare genetic condition that impacts various aspects of his development. He is also on the autism spectrum, which adds specific challenges but further defines the sweet, unique character his family loves so deeply.

Over the years, his condition has affected his development and feeding, as well as his muscles and legs. Living with chronic pain and weakness, CJ finds walking and standing particularly difficult. On many days, even simple movements lead to discomfort and exhaustion. Despite these hurdles, he maintains a quiet strength and never gives up.

CJ was also diagnosed with Gastroparesis, a condition where the stomach empties slowly due to nerve and muscle damage. As he cannot eat or digest food normally, he relies on a GJ feeding button to receive nutrition and medication directly into his intestines.

Although this intervention has provided immense support, it requires continuous care, medical supplies, and hospital visits that take a significant emotional and financial toll.

Overseeing his pain management, leg physiotherapy, and specialist consultations demands a steadfast commitment of both time and resources.

CJ faces more in a single day than many encounter in a lifetime, yet there is so much more to him than his medical condition; he is a funny, caring, and remarkably brave individual. He finds his greatest happiness in music, quiet cuddles, and being surrounded by those who provide him with a sense of safety.

The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to everyone who has read his story and chosen to support him. Your kindness brings a sense of hope and renewed strength to CJ’s life every single day.

Zelnay Liebenberg: R3 Million Fight for Her Life After Relapse

zelnay liebenberg relapse

This brave little girl has already endured so much, and yet her journey has taken another heartbreaking turn. Despite everything, she continues to fight with courage far beyond her years.

At this stage, her only remaining hope is a bone marrow transplant together with immunotherapy treatment that could save her life, but comes at a devastating cost of R3 million.

Behind this fight stands a family whose hearts are breaking. Her parents are carrying a weight no parent should ever have to bear, and the emotional toll has been overwhelming.

We ask you not only to lift Zelnay up in prayer but to also pray for her parents.
For strength when they feel weak.
For peace in the midst of fear.
For comfort in moments of deep uncertainty.

Today, we are asking you to stand with this family.
To share Zelnay’s story.
To give, if you are able.
To keep them covered in prayer.

Hope for Conor: The Urgent Search for a Kidney Donor to Help Save Conor’s Life

Conor van Baalen

An update by Conor van Baalen’s mom regarding his journey toward receiving a life-saving kidney transplant.
Sadly, she has been informed that she is not eligible to be a living donor for Conor.

While this news is deeply disappointing for the family, they remain hopeful and determined as they continue exploring every possible option for his transplant.

The search is now being widened to include potential donors of any blood group who may be willing to donate a kidney to help save Conor’s life.

Anyone who feels led to consider becoming a donor is encouraged to make contact so that the Living Donor Questionnaire can be shared and completed. Contact: hopeforconor@gmail.com.

At this stage, the family is carefully investigating every available avenue and continues to hold onto hope as they seek a suitable donor for Conor.

Please keep Conor and his family in your thoughts and prayers as they continue this journey.

In Loving Memory of Leandré Lottering – 7 March 2026

leandre lottering

With deep sadness and heavy hearts, I received the news that precious little Leandré went peacefully into the Arms of Jesus this morning at 06:00.

After such a courageous battle, her tiny body could no longer fight, and Heaven gained a beautiful little girl. Though her time on Earth was far too short, her life touched countless hearts and her bravery inspired so many who followed her journey.

Today we remember a little girl who showed unimaginable strength, who was deeply loved, and who will never be forgotten. Her light will continue to shine in the hearts of all who cared for her.

To Leandré’s beloved parents and family, there are no words that can truly ease the pain of losing a child. Please know that you are surrounded by love, prayer, and a community that mourns alongside you. May God hold you close, comfort your broken hearts, and carry you gently through the days ahead.

Little Leandré is now free from pain, wrapped in perfect peace, and safe in the loving Arms of Jesus. Fly high, beautiful angel. You will forever be loved and remembered.

Rest in heavenly peace,
Leandré Lottering: 2 February 2020 – 7 March 2026

Devastating News and Prayer Request for Leandré Lottering

Leandré Lottering prayer request

Tonight, my heart is shattered beyond words.

The results are in. Little Leandré’s tiny body is now filled with cancer. The disease has spread aggressively to her brain and spinal cord, and there are no further treatment options left to save her fragile body.

Palliative care arrangements are currently being put into place. She will remain in hospital under close monitoring before she is allowed to go home to be surrounded by her family’s love.

This is devastating news. The kind that steals the air from your lungs.

Leandré’s family needs prayers and support now more than ever before.

Let us not wait until a child has transitioned before we show up. Let us not scroll past when a family is silently breaking. This precious little girl is still here. Her parents are still holding her. Their hearts are still beating through unimaginable pain.

Close contact is being kept with the incredible women from the cancer association in their hometown, ensuring the family is supported every step of the way. But they need more than structures and processes, they need a community wrapped around them.

Tonight is heavy. The weight of this journey feels almost unbearable. There are moments of deep questioning, of asking God how much longer this road can be walked. Loving these children so fiercely, only to face this pain, takes a piece of the heart each time.

We humbly ask you to pause wherever you are and pray for a miracle.
Pray for divine intervention.
Pray for strength in her fragile body.
Pray for wisdom for the medical team.
Pray that hope will rise where fear tries to take hold.

Please pray for comfort. Please pray for peace.
Please pray for this precious little girl and the family who loves her beyond measure.

Leandré Lottering prayer request

If you are able, please consider making a donation to assist this family during this heartbreaking time.

Update on Brave Warrior, Kian Ludick (Nephroblastoma)

Latest update on brave warrior, Kian Ludick who was diagnosed with Nephroblastoma in 2021, directly from his mommy, Luzelle.

Back in January 2025, Kian was enrolled in a specialised school designed to cater to his unique needs. Thanks to a supportive environment and specialised therapies, Kian has shown amazing progress! He is communicating much better, expressing his needs effectively, and has even started potty training

To access this specialised care, they had to adjust their budget to prioritise his well-being above all else. Luzelle and Kian also had to move to Kathu. While Kian is thriving, he does miss his father and siblings dearly. She highlights that while this move and specialised schooling are a significant investment, seeing Kian’s development makes it completely worthwhile.

Luzelle is closely managing Kian’s health. He is no longer on blood pressure medication, though it is still being monitored. Risperdal is now only administered on an as-needed basis for severe meltdowns.

Kian continues to live with nephroblastosis and requires scans twice a year to monitor the abnormal cells. Following his scan on 11 November 2025, Luzelle is thankful to report that no changes were detected. Kian remains in remission!

We are so grateful to God for making all this possible. His blessings and guidance have given us hope and strength  throughout this journey. We’re thankful for amazing friends and family who have supported us through all this.” – Luzelle

We are standing behind you and are rooting for you, Kian!
– The AOM Team

Important Note: While it is wonderful news that Kian is in remission, please remember that remission does not mean cured. Kian requires lifelong monitoring to manage his condition, and we appreciate your continued prayers and support. xxx

Beyond December: Keeping the Lifeline Strong in January

january giving matters

As the new year begins, many of us are taking a moment to reset and reflect. January is often a time for tightening belts and recovering from the holiday season – a trend that is deeply felt in the charitable sector.

While the surge of holiday giving tends to end in December, the reality of the work we do remains a daily, constant necessity. We wanted to share 5 powerful reason why Giving in January is so important, and truly special:

1. The “January Gap” is Real

Many charities face a significant drop in donations after December, however, the need for life-saving medical care, surgeries, and daily healthcare expenses never takes a holiday. Your gift in January helps bridge this critical gap!

2. Affirm your own Abundance

Giving, even when you feel stretched, shifts your mindset. It’s a powerful act of intention for the new year and a proven mood booster (hello, “helper’s high”)!

3. Start resolutions with Action

Resolve to be more charitable this year? Donating in January is a concrete way to kickstart that goal, setting a positive pattern for the months ahead.

4. Small amounts have HUGE Impacts

Because fewer people give in January, your contribution – whether it’s the cost of a coffee or a few extra Rand – can go further and make a more visible difference. Every bit helps!

5. Become a “Year Round Hero”

January is the perfect time to set up a small, recurring monthly donation. Even the cost of one coffee a month provides a “predictable income.” For a charity, knowing they have a steady “budget” helps them plan bigger projects for the entire year ahead.

Your kindness, especially during these lean months, is what enables us to continue our work.

Let’s make January a month of powerful impact, showing that even in challenging times, our community’s heart beats strong.

With gratitude,
The Arms of Mercy team
