Please Help to Support our Children during the Global Corona Virus Outbreak

COVID-19 is fast spreading in South Africa; our thoughts and prayers are going out to all those families directly impacted.

Our “Special Needs” children who are most vulnerable, might be at risk (especially those undergoing cancer treatments and with very low immune systems). We are totally depending on our Donors to assist our children with funding for ongoing medical and maintenance treatment. Without your help this can have this most devastating effects on our children.

While Arms of Mercy under normal circumstances raise awareness by hosting events and making bracelets, the current restrictions put in place by Government to reduce interpersonal interactions i.e. of hosting events are making this impossible and extremely difficult.

We are therefore asking for your support in the form of financial assistance to help our children who are currently depending on additional financial help.

Vulnerable group of Children

  • Undergoing active chemotherapy for any diagnosis.
  • Receiving treatment for Leukemia or lymphoma.
  • Has received a donor stem cell transplant in the last 12 months.
  • Receiving Immunotherapy including CAR-T patients.
  • Receiving other antibody treatments for cancer.
  • Receiving targeted cancer treatments (these usually end with –nib, for example dasatinib, crizotinib).
  • Any child with a low immune system.

15 February is World Childhood Cancer Day

Supporting the fighters, admiring the survivors, honoring the taken, and never ever giving up HOPE!

International Childhood Cancer Day is celebrated annually on 15 February to raise awareness and to express support for children and adolescents with cancer.

In South Africa, an average of 800 to 1000 children are newly diagnosed with cancer each year. Childhood cancers share general symptoms with other illnesses; knowing the warning signs can be vital in early detection and treatment.

According to a 2014 report by the American Cancer Society, it is now estimated that one in 408 children worldwide will be diagnosed with cancer before the age of 15. It is estimated that currently less than half of children with cancer in South Africa are diagnosed, and many of those who are diagnosed are in advanced stage of illness. One of the reasons for this is a lack of awareness and knowledge in parts of the health system regarding the early warning signs of childhood cancer. – www.gov.za

It is important to know that cancer in children tend to be different from cancers in adults. The majority of them occur in the developing cells like blood, bone marrow, the kidneys and tissues of the nervous system.  The CANSA Childhood Cancer Awareness Programme aims to educate the public on the early warning signs. In South Africa, the St Siluan Warning Signs for Childhood Cancer are used.
