Unicorn Bracelets for Katelyn Brand – Neuroblastoma
Katelyn Brand was diagnosed with Grade 4 Embryonal Central Nervous System Neuroblastoma – a very rare form of brain cancer, in November 2017. She had extensive surgery to remove the tumor and started with chemo in the same month.
Katelyn is currently being treated at the Unitas Pediatric Oncology unit, and is on very strong chemo as the cancer is quite aggressive and fast-growing.
Doctors believe it is curable, however, she will need radiation for that and she has to be at least 6 years old to receive it. They feel the best radiation for her would be proton therapy, but this is not currently available in South Africa, is very expensive, and highly unlikely to come to SA anytime soon.
This being said, the doctors are very unsure about her future treatment options as she is only the second child with this type of cancer that they have ever encountered. They are therefore getting advice and guidance from overseas doctors every step of the way.
Mom and Dad are doing whatever they can, but with mom spending most of her time with Katelyn in hospital or at home recovering, she does not get to earn much of an income. The family will appreciate any support that can be given.
Please help us to raise funds for little Katelyn so she can get the treatment and therapy she needs.
