Ebony and Ivory Bracelets for Marlo Nagel – Cerebral Palsy
Marlo Nagel was born on the 4th of January 2016, his parents` perfect little prince from God. After his 1st birthday, Mom and Dad decided to take him to a Paediatric Neurologist as he did not reach the milestones he had to by this time.
During a long consultation she broke the news that Marlo has Cerebral Palsy… their son would never be able to sit, crawl, walk or speak.
He was sent for Speech therapy, to see an Occupational Therapist and an MRI.
After reading an article about the Family Hope Centre and Brain Child fund, his parents were full of hope. They raised R40 000 out of their own pocket and signed up for a 3 day Parent Training Conference, September 2017.
Hyperbarics Oxygen Therapy
Marlo had to do Hydrotherapy (lots of playing in low warm water) because of the stiffness on his right side. After hearing about Hyperbarics (Oxygen Therapy), and that it would help Marlo with his brain injury by sending oxygen to to the injured parts of his brain – they started therapy in 2018 – Marlo`s improvement is unbelievable. After sessions he has so much energy and the stiffness in his right side has improved so much, that he started using his hand to take things. He never used to do this!
This cost the family R10 500 for the 3 months sessions, which only happened Mondays, Wednesday, Fridays.
The good news is that they can now buy one from a company in Rivonia for R100 000. To have this chamber at home means Marlo can fit in a lot more sessions, and it will speed up the process of helping him reach his milestones. Learn more at www.oxygenate.co.za.
On the 5th of February 2019. Marlo had an operation to receive botox to relax his muscles. They also cut the hamstrings where it was extended by 1cm. After the operation, he no longer walks on his toes or with his legs crossing over.
Marlo is currently busy with Neurological Speech Therapy, Neurological Physiotherapy, and Hippo Therapy (Horse Riding). This is doing wonders for Marlo and he really enjoys it a lot. Since the physiotherapy, he has much more control over his head. He also practices hard to exercise his muscles and the more he does, the more he achieves.
The Speech Therapist did pick up that his tongue only moves forwards and backwards though, so food needs to be placed between the molars so that he can move his tongue to the sides. He also makes more sounds, almost as if he wants to start chatting.
There is still a long way to go, but at the end of the day he will reap the benefits. Let`s support Marlo on his journey – together we can change his world, one bracelet at a time!
