Shortly after her first birthday, Yva Adriaanse, developed a small button next to her ear, just above the cheek. Doctors thought it was the beginning of mumps, but a few days later a bloody secretion came out of her ear, which was not normal.
She got antibiotics and ear drops, but it only helped the ear. The entire gland by her jaw gradually increased in size, and she eventually saw an ENK specialist after a month, who only visited Upington once a month.
He did a CT scan and immediately realized that it was a type of growth that started to grow behind her nose. Her jaw was already eaten away and the bottom of her skull shows signs of erosion. After many tests and weeks, they finally determined that she had Lymphoblastic Leukemia, and she immediately started with chemotherapy.
Yva followed a full 7 month long chemo program where she and her family spent many days and nights at the hospital. The doctors say she responded very well to the chemo and that there are hardly any cancer cells left in her blood!
Yva still has a full 2 years of chemotherapy in front of her.
