Mienke Mulder choked on milk at her daycare in Nelspruit on the 25th of August 2017. She was rushed to hospital by the daycare as she was already blue in her face. When she arrived at the hospital Mienke was without a heartbeat. Doctors managed to get a pulse after 15 minutes, but weren`t very optimistic.
She was then airlifted to JHB as Nelspruit did not have the necessary facilities to treat her. She stayed in ICU and the doctors at JHB did not think she would make it through the night… but she did! They said that babies in her condition never open their eyes again…. and once again Mienke proved them wrong!
Mienke has Cerebral Palsy, and MRI scans revealed that she suffers severe brain damage.
She is at home now and receive ongoing therapy, but progress is very slow.
In October 2018 she is 19 months old… more than a year after the accident and she still can`t eat or talk. She receives milk via a mickey tube (through her stomach with a little tube), but only 150ml every 4 hours. Other than that, she eats and drinks nothing.
Mienke`s fits/seizures are still not under control, and she has them daily. She also chokes a lot and stops breathing at times. It`s not clear what she can and cannot see, but she is very aware of her surroundings.
Mienke’s India trip!
Mienke’s doctor suggested she go to India for stem-cell therapy and treatment. In India they have advanced technology where the stem cells come from the bone marrow which goes directly to the brain, so chances of success are so much higher.
But stem cells are not the only reason Mienke is heading to Indie. The doctor wants to send her for an MRI in India as she believes their MRIs are excellent and give so much more detail. They then work out a whole program written specifically for Mienke and her needs. She will receive 2 weeks of intensive treatment and therapy for 7 hours a day to stimulate the areas that were damaged, as to not form pathways etc.
Mienke`s doctor is still busy with research. Once we have more details we`ll make an update on this page.
